Launched in 1998, ODP is one of the oldest directories on the Internet. The Open Directory Project (ODP), also known as DMOZ is one of the most comprehensive human-reviewed directories on the Web. The Open Directory powers the core directory services for the Web's largest and most popular search engines and portals, including Netscape Search, AOL Search, Google, Lycos, HotBot, DirectHit, and hundreds of others. The Open Directory Project is available in many languages from Danish to Turkish. Currently ODP features over 4.8 million sites in over 590,000 categories. You can become an editor by going to: http://www.dmoz.org/help/become.html. As an ODP editor, you are responsible for selecting, evaluating, describing and organizing Web sites in a specific category within the Open Directory Project. There are four steps to submitting a site to DMOZ.org. Step One is to Determine whether a site is appropriate for submission to the ODP. Step two is to do a quick search in the directory at dmoz.org (the home of the Open Directory) to be sure your site isn't already listed. Step Three involves identifying the single best category for your site. The final step once you've selected the best category for your site, is to go directly to that category on dmoz.org and then click suggest URL. Follow the instructions on the submission form carefully. Listings that make us of spam tactics will not be accepted into the directory. Not that once a site is submitted it can take from two weeks to a number of months to appear in the directory.
