Universal search is Google's term
for blended search, which means a
SERP can return a
blend of relevant search results that could include news items, video, and
still images in addition to typical website links.
In June of 2007, Google announced
the launch of Universal Search and was the first major search engine to
incorporate blended search results. ASK followed shortly thereafter
with what they referred to as the ASK 3-D experience.
