Short for the World Wide Web. The Web environment consists of billions of web pages that are interlinked via the Internet. Sir Tim Berners-Lee is credited with creating the Web in 1989 and has played an active role in devlopment of Web standards. While working at CERN (Conseil Europïen pour la Recherche Nuclïaire (European Council for Nuclear Research), Berners-Lee began coming up with ideas for the Web as early as 1980.

In 1989, Berners-Lee wrote a proposal describing an elaborate information management system that would ultimately become known as the Web. In the mid-90's the term surfing the Web was born and the Web paved the way for a lot of dotcom success stories including Yahoo and later Google.
